O2 Sensor 2000 Camry V6

My wife told me that while I was out of town, a warning light came on in her 2000 Camry V6. She took it to the dealer and was told that an O2 sensor was bad. They want over $220 to replace it. I have changed O2 sensors on my other vehicles, but I do not know which one is "bank



1, sensor 1. Is this the one on the manifold at the front of the engine? Also, I do not have a code reader. My next question is do I need to clear the codes on this vehicle, or can I just change the sensor? Any help would be appreciated. Thanks much!

$220 is not bad for the inflated prices dealers normally charge for O2 sensors, so maybe it is a good idea to have the dealer do it since you normally need a special tool to do it. One way to clear the codes is to pull the fuse for the computer.

Bank 1 sensor 1 is the one on the exhaust manifold -- the one right behind the radiator.

You can pull the ECM fuse for a minute to clear the codes. Or Autozone help you with that with their loaner OBD-II readers.

Autozone will also lend you an oxygen sensor socket to remove the thing. If you have a Calif model, then the sensor itself can cost $215; if you have a non-Calif model, then the sensor is only $110. Better yet, the universal sensor for the 2000 Camry non-Calif (Bosch #15733, planar type) costs only $74.99 (Checkers, Kragen, Advance Auto), but you'll have to splice the old connector, which is easy and the patented Posi-Lock system works well.

Toyota had a TSB regarding bad Denso sensor designs and asked Denso to redesign them. These oxygen sensors can damage the catalytic converter, which is also covered under the emissions warranty. But you are way out of warranty if covered under the TSB. Check with regional office to see if they are willing to fix it under good-will.

The non-Calif sensor from Bosch is a planar type sensor (not sure about the Calif sensor). The Bosch planar sensor is superior to the thimble sensor Denso makes. The planars light up faster, use less power for the heater, and are more resistant to contamination than thimbles because of the design.
