Valve Seals.. yes??

SO there's this guy..has a '96 Avalon 1MZFE w/195k Mi. on it. Runs good. But. After the car sits over-night, it blows a big ol' blue/grey cloud out of the tail pipe, and does for 30 seconds or so after the first start of the day. If you warm it up, then turn it off and let it sit for 2-3 hours, it doesn't smoke at all, neither does it smoke if it's already warm. I'm thinking valve stem seals are allowing oil to drip past the valves into the cylinders over-night, then is getting burned off.

Question is: Can you change the seals without taking the heads off the block?? Could it be a burned valve? The guy said it was eating 2 qts of oil a month with no spots on the ground... anyone?? anyone?? anyone?? Bueller??

2 quarts a month is more than a little oil, how many quarts per miles. 195000 well whats the compression etc. It could be valve seals or alot more.

As you say, it is valve guide wear and seal failure. While 30 secs is a long time for oil to burn-off in the combustion chamber, it is no more than that.

The 2 quarts a month thing sounds excessive and tends to point to ring problems,..but if it runs OK and the smoke is confined to the morning start-up, why worry about it?

Replacing the valve seals is not straight-forward with DOHC heads (unlike OHV ) and on the V6 may mean the rear head will have to be removed.
