1982 toyota truck: Electrical problems

Okay, I am having some problems with my nw (used) toyota.

1982 SR5, 5-speed (swapped from a diff truck), 22R carb'd

First, the Charge and Brake light is on on the dash. Now, I know what you're saying: "Alternator". But I am convinced this is not the case. When I got the truck the battery wouldn't hold a charge and was weak. It was barely enough to start the truck. In addition, he had a silenoid rigged straight to the battery because it wouldn't work normally and I left it plugged in one night and it drained the battery beyond enough power to start the truck. (I have sinced fixed the problem- blown fuse). Anyway, I swapped in a better batey I already had and cleaned the terminals, etc. Once I started it, the lights were out unti this morning when I started it. I restarted the truck multiple times and ran the radio for a couple hours without the engine running (ran engine ~2hrs after), and my hydrometer still says full. Any ideas?

Second, My horn doesen't work. The fuse is good, the switches are good, the horn works when jumpered to the battery. Does anybody have a wiring diagram so I can rewire the horn?

Last, My backups lights don't work. Which fuse is it ran through? Where is the switch located? The wiring and bulbs are good.

Thats it for now, thanks.

I forgot- Do you think having the radio constant 12v wired directly to the battery (eg wire runs from radio through firewall to + terminal) could affect the lights being on?

You might check grounds in dash area. When they open up, strange things can happen.

Have your charging system checked properly for alt output ( volts AND amps). Your method of testing by idling the truck is not accurate. At idle your truck takes very little power to run so a weak alt may keep the battery charged. If you were to drive it with the lights and heater on the battery may go dead.

Why not get a wiring diagram and fix it. If you know the fuse, switches and horn are good it would be easier to fix it than rewire it. It most likely uses a horn relay, have you checked it for proper operation.

Don't know.

Should be on the trans. If you have an auto trans it may be part of the neutral safety switch.

The wiring and bulbs are good.

Well, the alternator was the problem on my '87 for the alt and brake lights at least. It was charging okay at a fixed 14.5 vdc but the light output from the alternator did not work. An auto electric shop did not find it either. When the alternator finally died and was replaced the alternator and brake light problem was cured.

Thought that in an `82 Toyota there wasnt one. Could be wrong, I have been once before, but then I only thought I was wrong. :oP

FWIW, on the Borg Warner boxes, you also want to make sure that you pull the "FILL" plug when changing the gearbox oil, if you pull the wrong plug, you drop the reverse gear and pivot onto the bottom of the box :-p
