1997 5 speed rack, key issues.

1997 Four Runner EFI 5 speed, just got this truck, & I don't know the history. The rack is shot, & I can't get the key to go to the start position. It's "locked", by the bad rack/sterring wheel lock, I guess. I triggered the start relay for the soleniod to trigger the starter, now the fuel pump isn't working. I'm pretty sure the truck has been driven with a bad rack, until the worm gear got worn out. There's a lot of play in the steering wheel, to make the wheels turn. How can I get the truck to start? Just to get the truck running, would jacking it up, taking the strain off the front end, "unlock" the steering wheel, so it will crank? Is this common? A friend has the same year truck, with a "leaking" rack. Anyone have any service info on this truck, for wiring? I have info on the 89 - 92, & 89 - 90 pickup 22RE, but it's not the same. Thanks, Dani.

I guess you could remove the U-Joint from the steering column and the rack, to see if that frees the Steering wheel so you can start it, but I don't think that's the problem. Is there any play in the steering wheel? If I remember correctly, the steering lock only engages from OFF to ACC and back. So getting it from ON to Start, does not involve the steering lock. Are you sure you have the correct key?

The 2nd gen 4Runner and Pickups, were know to have Power Steering Pump problems, but I never heard of a rack being an issue.

Thanks for the input. I just realised my post here actually did appear. I just reposted. The key is right. It was driven to me this way, then the key refused to past ON. There is play in the wheel, but it acts fine. Anyone have a service manual for this truck? It's 2.7 liter 16 valve DOHC 3RZ-FE I think. Also, the number on top of the engine is missing a letter. E3...-W73F 87. What's after E3? Looks like a D, but I'm not sure. I have 1990 - 1996 service manual to trade. Thanks, Dani.
