Today I inspected my rear brakes on my 1996 4Runner. There appeared to be an oily sludge on the inside of the drum and on the pads. This was the same on both right and left rear drum brakes. Does this sound like there is something wrong? please reply to snipped-for-privacy@hotmail.com

Wheel Cylinders are probably leaking

My thought as well, wheel cylinders. Searcher
You'll have brake dust in there but it shouldn"t be oily or greasy.
this is could be axle seals also if its wheel cylinders just peel back the cylinder dust seal back and see if there is any fluid there should be none.

Had this problem on my '97 4Runner [RIP]. It was the axle seals. Potentially dangerous because of loss of braking. You'll probably have to replace the brake pads as well because of the contamination.
