'90 Corolla -shifting questions

4 cyl/sedan DX with 136K miles runs smooth and great. Moves at request with good handling. BUT, in the early morning, after I gear into "R", it would hesitate for 1 or 2 seconds to engage the gear before backing out of the driveway. Besides that, when it kicks into "R" or "D" from "P", I can really feel the "kick". Maybe "jerking" is more appropriate. After that "kick", everything is fine. Are these normal for a old car? Or I should be looking into something?

It can be. That reluctance to go into 'R' and if the trans ha some miles on it,..is a sign of a worn-oilpump or sticking valve-body (so I've been told over the years).

On my '79 Ford,..the FMX auto once up to temp, takes a lunch-break to go into 'R',...unless I blip the throttle to boost the oil-pump's output to overcome a sticky valve or just to get enough oil-pressure once the trans oil is hot.

Jerky changes, from what I've been told, is due to increased clearances between drums and bands inside the trans. A service is supposed to reset these operating clearances, but, once the trans has worn beyond a certain point, and the band-wear is substantial, trying to adjust-out this type of problem can have negative effects for other gear-shifts which use the same band,....so the trans-specialists leave it alone.

Take it and get it serviced by a reputable transmission specialist, and keep your fingers crossed.
