92 toyota pickup wont run.

The engine will start but soon as i let off the key it shuts off. I thought the ignition switch was bad so i truned the key and held it. Engine still died. Replaced fuel pump, fuel filter, EFI and Starter relay. Im getting good pressure from the filter. Any ideas would be great. thanks

Please define the problem. You said that it runs until you let go of the key, but in the next sentence you said you hold the key and it dies. I'm confused. Does it die or run if the key is held?

starter stops moving. It may run for a second or two then it dies. So i thought maybe it was the ignition that was bad. So I held the key so that starter was still spinning after the motor fired up thinking the ignition switch was bad. But is stalled. so that not the problem. I took a rag with gas on it and put it on the intake manifold turned the key fired up and ran till it sucked all the feums off the rag. it runs when it gets gas. Cant be an ignition problem. its just not getting any gas. I blew out the fuel line and return line there clear. Changed the fuel pump and fuel filter. I dont know what the problem is. would the fuel regulator stop the gas from getting to the injectors? I have good pressure from the fuel filter.

would the fuel regulator stop the gas from getting to the injectors?

Yes, the regulator can shunt the fuel back to the tank, and none of it will go to the injectors. At idle (high vacuum) the regulator is open so that the fuel that is delivered by not needed goes back to the gas tank. At speed (low vacuum) the regulator closes so that all of the available fuel is delivered to the injectors. A common failure mode is for the regulator to fail open so that all fuel simply bypasses the injector rail and feeds directly back to the gas tank.

I have good pressure from the fuel filter.

i dont have much return fuel comming back.

And you DO have good fuel delivery?

How do you know that you have good delivery and no return?

I took the out line off the fuel filter and there is good pressure. Then I took the return line off the gas tank and there isnt much comming back.

I reconnected the fuel filter before checking the retrun line.

Can you disconnect the fuel lines at the injector rail?

This test will tell you if the gas is even getting to the rail. If gas is going in, but none is coming out then you have a blockage. If you have gas at the filter -- which you insist you have -- and no gas at the rail, then you have a blockage at the filter, or between the filter and the rail.

Have you isolated the spark system? If fuel is going where it is supposed to be going, and there is weak or no spark, then you're gonna have problems.

I took off the air intake from the manifold and put a rag that had been dipped in gas covered the intake manifold with it and turned the key. The truck fired up and ran untill is sucked all the gas off the rag. Im pretty sure its not a spark problem. And yes im positive that i have gas comming out the outlet of the fuel filter. so like you said i guess its plug from there on somewhere. I looked inside the manifold and the inside look really dirty (all kinds of grit build up). I would bet that is the problem. The whole manifold is clogged up with junk. Im taking the truck to a friend (mechanic).

that is connected to the manifold and can come off. From what I can see. I got a Chilston book and its crap.

Do you have power to the fuel injectors ? Do you have injector pulse when cranking the engine ?

I looked inside the manifold

The intake manifold only lets in air, not fuel. You say it ran with a gas soaked rag over the intake so how can the intake be plugged ? The fuel is supplied by the injectors. Have you checked fuel pressure at the fuel rail ? Have you checked for power to feul injectors ? Have you checked for injector pulse yet ?

I use to have a 92 Toyota Pick-up, the idea of fuel getting to the rails is a good call. You can loosen the bolt at the back of the rail and put the key in the on position to check for fuel flow. If you have fuel there you can loosen the rails from the injectors to eliminate a bad rail. Finally you can hookup a jumper lead to the injectors to check for normal operations. Unfortunately I sold my factory maintenance manuals so I can not tell you which lead is hot and the other is ground. Try searching the net.

Try the mass air flow sensor or your air filter, if you are getting enough fuel and obviously spark.
