'96 4Runner Starting Problems

Hi All...

I've got a automatic/V6 and it recently has had problems starting. It is intermittent and the only consistency is that it would be fine for several days, and then out of the blue start acting up. Then, the other day I got off the freeway and hit a pothole rather hard and the enginge stalled, which then took several tries to get started.

Last night I replaced the fuel filter, the plugs, cleaned and oiled the K&N air filter (that I've had long before the problems occurred) and poured in a bottle of fuel injection cleaner. It started and ran fine last night and this morning, then this afternoon after work I made 3 stops and it gave me problems starting all 3 times.

Just for clarification, by "problems" starting, I mean that normally it kicks right off. When it acts up, I can crank it all day long and it won't turn over. I have to turn the ignition completely off, wait a few seconds and try again, and again, and again and eventually it starts. The battery is about a month old and it dosen't click as if the starter is bad...

Any thoughts?

Thanks...

When was the last time you replaced the plug wires/distributor cap? They're a single unit. Mine was starting to act up like that (not quite as bad) and I checked the wires and cap and there was minor but noticeable corrosion inside the cap. Cleaned it up and the problem is gone for now. I'll have to replace it next time it acts up though, since I don't want to be stranded.

Well, actually, never - at least not as long as I've owned the vehicle. Replacing the rotor, cap and wires seems to be the consensus from just about everyone I've talked to so far, then possibly the fuel pump.

I really appreciate your help...
