brake pressure on rotors

Help please:....never had this problem before. My '88 2W p/u seems to 'apply' brake pressure after 20 or so miles. After which; it seems to increase. This gets to the point that the front wheels and hubs get so hot that they cannot be touched. The drag is so bad at times that the transmission (auto) shifts down a gear. Any thoughts on this out there in our wonderful land of Toyota family?

thanks;

Might want to check out the brake booster. One test would be to disconnect the vacuum line to the booster and see if the problem goes away (caution: your brake pedal will be very heavy w/o the booster) or have a shop check it out. You could also try swapping boosters with one from a junkyard.

Have you replaced the front pads recently? I have an 85 4Runner that needed new front pads. When I stuck them on, it turned out that the rotors were so far gone that the pads just bit into the rotors and did exactly like you said, they got hot and grabbed on to the rotor. So, my guess would be the rotors need to be checked out. Just an uneducated opinion ;>) Chris whitewall junkie and variation dabbler Mfinja's Hot Wheels with Whitewalls

Ken refers to the 'slave cylinder' in the brake system in his response. Just what is this part, and what does it do?

Had same problem on my 89 pickup. Master cylinder was the culprit. I went thru many sets of pads and got smart after 2 set of chewed up rotors. Ultimately master cylinder failed while sitting with foot on brake while sitting at red light. 50 $ part and a couple of hours of easy work. Udok

I had the same problem on my 76 FJ-40. The problem was an internal leak inside the brake booster. Replacing the booster fixed the problem.
