96 T100: Brake light, engine noise, maint. sched...

Hi,

Got a 96 T100 SR5 4x4, about 160k miles on it. Couple questions -

1) I don't have access to a chiltons or related, and I have a brake light (not tail light) out. Can anyone walk me thru replacing this? It can't be difficult, right?

2) I have some engine noise at around 2000-2500 rpm. It sounds just kind of louder and clatterier than the usual engine noise. Power is not affected, happens in all gears. Does anyone know what this might be?

3) At my last dealer visit ($700 for a new battery and starter, yeesh) the following items were recommended:

valve adustment, $600 fuel injection flush, $100 spark plugs $150 thermostat $176

What is a "valve adjustment"? What is an injector flush? How necessary are these? Can I have any/all of these done at a local shop to try and save money?

Appreciate any & all help! Thanks, Thomas

Just drop your tailgate and there are three bolts and the whole light housing comes out. Very easy.

I also have a 96 T100 with 244,000 miles, but have never had any engine noise like you discribe?

I had my valve adjusted, but it did not cost near that, I think I would try another dealer.

Do the plugs yourself, about $4 each from the dealer. You will need a long extension for your ratchet.
