Got an intermittent problem with starting with my 86 1 Ton 22RE. Every so often, the starter will not crank when the truck is hot. If I wait overnight it starts right off.
Symptoms when it does not start are no click, lights dim when ignition switch is placed in the Start position. Head lights are plenty bright enough. Have not checked voltage across the battery; I might try that next time it won't start.
I understand that this problem is usually caused by solenoid or starter winding resistance that builds up when heat is present. I have good battery contacts and cables.
My question is, can a bench tester like ones at Auto Zone detect this type of problem, or should I just go ahead and replace the starter? It is three years old, and might have 10k miles on it (the mechanic that installed it is out of business now so I'm stuck).
The starter was remanufactured by Orange County Alternator.
