Pump has gone bad. If I take off the belt while I wait for the new pump, will it hurt the truck to drive it? Pump is very clattery sounding and am afraid it will self destruct before the replacement I ordered arrives. No. Depending on how much low speed cornering and parking you do, however, it could wear like hell on your forearms :)
Really, once the belt is removed the ps pump is just inert weight
Good idea - If the old pump falls apart and sends metal shards and trash into the steering gear, you'll wreck that, too...
The only thing taking the belt off could hurt is the steering box /if/ you waited a long time and let the system run dry, because the PS fluid cycling through is also a lubricant. But if you leave fluid in the system and change the pump in a few days, you should be fine.
Make sure to warn anyone else driving the truck that the power steering belt is off. They might get into an accident figuring they can just spin the wheel and turn - with a prior warning they will drive a little more carefully and know not to get into tight spots.

How many miles did you have on the Tacoma? My PS pump died as soon as the warranty date was passed (37,000 or so miles?). Cost me $500+ to replace. Toyota says they don't have a pump problem.
