68' VW Bus Heater Question

Hi All,



Just acquired a 68' Westy. Restored body and paint, rebuit engine and many other upgrades. Of course, as one would expect, the heater smells like exhaust. As I am not going to drive the vehicle in the colder months, I really don't need the heat, so I don't want to spend the money to replace the heater boxes...., at least not at this time. Is there any problem with disconnecting the heater tubes right where they come off the fan shroud and head down through the compartment floor to the heat exchanger? I have been told that doing this could cause the engine to overheat. Don't want to burn up an engine with

You are better off removing the big hoses that connect the heater boxes to the central WYE fitting. Then securely block off the openings to the WYE so that there is no chance of any fumes being sucked into the cab.

The smaller hoses from the fan shroud deliver a small amt of air to the heater boxes to keep them from overheating. But I don't think it affects the engine itself if you block off the air from the shroud.

Thanks Speedy Jim,

I took the van for a 15 minute ride tonight and boy were those boxes hot. I think I will take your advice and disconnect things further down line so the heater boxwe don't get so hot.

I also found a hole in the seal of the rear window which I understand can cause exhaust to be pulled in from the rear. I guess things like this are to be expected with a van of this age.
