Basic Engine Questions VW Bug Auto Stick

All the info I can find on the internet and google is for engine in cars that people have been driving then have problems. I have a 69 That's been sitting for 8 months. Was told it was running. I hook a battery and battery charger from my truck to it and when I crank it you can hear the starter engage but the engine is Stuck? What's the best/quickest way to unstick a engine?

Another car I went to go look at that I might buy if another guy backs out (Crossing my Fingers). Was told the other guy had it cranked up 3 weeks ago. It's a 71 Autostick by the way. I hook up the battery and jumper cables. The lights come on and a light on the dash sometimes lights up that has a B on it I am guessing Battery. The engine turns feeely by hand.

Thanks for any help. I'm still learning and am a mechanialy slow but trying :-)

Thanks Steven

Try turning the engine by hand. Grab the Gen pulley and maybe put some tension on the belt. If it won't turn the crankshaft, the engine may be seized.

On an autostick, you can't push the car to spin the engine.

On a '71, "B" Means Brake Warning.

Autostick has a Neutral Safety switch that prevents starter from operating if in gear.

If you want to test starter, do this:

underneath. Be sure it's in Neutral and wear glasses!

If you get either car, buy the Bentley Official Manual. It has an excellent AutoStick section as well as engine info.

Thanks for the info.

The stuck one We tired to turn the bottom part that the pulley is attached to and it would not budge.

The other one I thought I had it in netural. I tired it with the brake pedal down, gas pedal down, no pedals down at all. I also tried the ermengcy brake.

Thanks Steven

I going tomorrow ot pay for the bug and get the title. Not sure when I will bring it home. I need to put tires on it that will be good for towing. I have 8 used tires now that are 195 R75's. Just need to pull

2 off one of my cars as I have 2 I haven't put on yet. I will try and post some pics after I get it.

Thanks Steven

I found a local guy who works on VW"s he's been doing it for 35+ years. he's in his 70ties and only works 4 hours a day but said he only charges 20 bucks an hour. Which I think is fair. SO when I go get my newest one I am going to take it to him and have hiom look at it. I paid for it this mornign and got the title. Can't wait to get it home.
