brake job on a Thing

I will do my a front brake job on a 73 thing this weekend. I am a banker by trade but I have (successfully) done brake jobs on Beetles but always with the assistance of a Haynes Manual.

I assume the front brakes on a 73 thing are similar to the brakes on my old 70 Beetle.

Am I overconfident?

I learned from a wise man that you only do one at a time so you can see how it goes back together.

you will be fine, Bobby....they are similar...the thing has a physically larger brake, but is basically the same....since you have experience with the drumbrakes you should be okay....i recommend new hardware(springs, hold downsprings/cups/pins) with ever "brakejob".. JT

Nice to find someone else here working on a Thing. I also have a '73. One of my recent projects was new brakes all around. They are similar to other drum brakes. Thing to note are most parts cross over from other Volkswagens of the era; however the rear drum is Thing specific, and it is a front drum braking system. Correct me if my memory serves me incorrectly, but didn't the bug have front disc in '70?

In Germany, yes, but only 1500 and 1600 engined models got them stock -- they were an option with lesser engines. First year for them was the 1967 model year, when the 1500 was introduced.

One thing I'll surely never understand.

Yeah. So had Buses and 411s. It follows that it can't have been a problem with disc brakes, as such. So why didn't the Bug get any? The US got everything in a Bug that money could buy those days, even the double-jointed rear axle in stickshift Standards for crying out loud -- but no disc brakes.

One has to wonder why.
