Bug: Nicest Running Board

Curious on running board opinion.

When restoring my bug, alot of items are viewed from an online picture. It makes it hard to really know what you like best.

I am considering a Mill Finished Aluminum Running Board..

They look silver.

We may paint the bug (1960) Bright Red or Black.

What do you think is the nicest type of running board? Black, Silver, Polished Stainles, Louvered, etc??

The reason I ask is because I don't want to waist money. I dont want to spend a bundle and when installed, have to chunk them for a black set etc..

Let me more importantly ask this: Would a mill finish aluminum look hideous? Or a stainless polished?

the louvered ones are kind of thin and bend pretty easily... but then again so do most of the cheap replacement ones. IMO they are not to be stood on anyways. I have never stood on any of the ones on any of my beetles and I am picky about them and tell everyone else not to..

I have to agree. Even the original stock running boards were not real strong, just mainly for looks. I don't think I would go with fiberglass though, as the vibrations seem to wear them out pretty quick, and there is more flexing in that area then people think. I would think they would probably help with structural integrity some also, so go strong...

Hey Ben I wiegh near 160lbs and have no problem standing on the original running boards of my 58 beetle. I have also installed the german running boards on my customers cars and have stood on them and bounced with out bending them just to show people the quality.

I also have the ribbed aluminum running boards on my 64 and really like those.

Hmm, Maybe the ones I had were not originals after all, or they were just worn out.. then again, I weigh around 250...

You can, but I don't really recommend it. The ones I had seem to bend pretty good. I usually used them to reach across my bug when washing, and some when I entering the vehicle. As I mentioned, mine may have been old or cheap quality, I dunno, but they did give some when I stepped on them...
