Engine misses badly when I turn the lights on

I have a 62 bug, 1200 stock engine, 6 volt system.

The car runs great, except when I turn on the headlights. Then it starts cutting out/missing at higher RPM's.

I checked the volts at the coil and found the following:

Lights off: 5.9 v. Lights on: 5.2 v.

Does this seem normal? Could this low voltage cause the cutting out? Ideas for fixing?

It's marginal. If the ignition (points/coil/condensor) were all up to snuff it could probably tolerate it.

The main problem is the headlight switch. *ALL* power to the front of the car (and to the ignition ckt) must go thru that switch and its terminals. It's a poor design but there you have it...

Here's a quickie test: Disconnect the Blk wire that feeds the coil. Run a jumper wire from the Coil to battery +. See if headlights affect it now.

Check, clean all grounds. I replaced wires and ends along with drilling new holes and screws on all four main lights. For the circuit not to draw more amps than it was designed for, the completion of it through the body/chassis to the battery depends on the grounding system including battery straps. Dennis
