Engine Temperature Questions -- Help Please!

If the left peashooter tail pipe is installed too far in next to the heat riser pipe inside the stock muffler, will it cause the Type I engine to run hot? Similarly, if it is installed too far from the heat riser pipe in the stock muffler, would it cause the engine to run cold in Winter? =A0 Any help is appreciated. TIA!

It should not no.

If you have ever seen a proper dissected silencer/muffler it would only affect the heating of the intake manifold, as all primary pipes are dumped into one expansion chamber. That said, you will affect the overall back-pressure with one pea shooter installed to far in. There is no such thing as to far out, exept for loosing it that is.. :o=]

So, one peashooter blocked(for the sake of an argument) will create more resistance to flow and henceforth leave you with a slightly hotter engine(Basically it gets lazy). Not something you would want on the Autobahn(For the sake of performance), but then again hundreds of thousands of Krauts have been up and down those Autobahns without a worry what so ever.

So, once more, no worries :O)

I was going through my Hot VWs mag collection looking for an answer to a question on a subject other than yours when I came across some info that might help you. In the Sept 1999 issue there was a two page article with pictures about a new product -- a stainless steel stock dimension exhaust system for the Type 1. One of the pics showed someone with a tape measure up against the tail pipe (pea shooter) before it entered the muffler. The caption said, "the year of your car (and style of bumper) will determine the distance the tail pipe goes into the muffler. Pre-1967 tip will go in 1&3/4 inches, while the '68 and later dimension is 3&3/8 inches. Measure the overall length of the tip, subtract the amount the tip enters the muffler, and that will determine the installed length of the tip."

The article doesn't say so, but I'm wondering if the reason for the two figures (1&3/4 vs. 3&3/8) is so that the exhaust will extend past the bumper. Does the '68 bumper look noticeably different from the previous years? Either that, or there is a difference after '67 in the length of the twin female ends of the muffler where the tail pipes enter them.

The peashooters should be installed so that they do not protrude into the silencer, or in other words, the same distance as the sleeve is long, measured at the shortest point(rel. to curvature of silencer).

I looked it up in my Robert Haynes Beetle manual. It said something like, if the left pipe is pushed too far in it could cause over heating and possible engine damage.

The orange R. Bently manual gives the correct procedure for getting the lengths of the tail pipes correct.

Look into the muffler with a light before you place the pea-shooter that will effect the heat riser. I've found a South American muffler that had it on the wrong side.
