Naaaah -- that's a bench mount. That wouldn't work, would it? This engine far outweights the heaviest table I got here. Pull the whole thing over, probably smack onto my head while I was down on the floor, looking for a Jesus spring.

Oh, is that why it says "bench engine stand?" Because it's a bench mount stand? heh heh Sure it would work if you have a bench worth a crap. If you have any kinda bench at all then you could probably beef it up some with $20 or so of lumber. You're looking at $35 for a stand sold by aircooled.net (that has a reputation for selling quality) that's made to bolt up to your engine without adapters plus $20 to add to some kinda bench that would support the weight - $55 total, or $50 for a Harbor Freight (that is known for NOT selling quality) stand that you still need some kind of adapter that you don't even know exists yet (and the total of the HF crap + adapter will almost certainly be more than $55). I'd buy the stand that you know would work well and concentrate on getting a good bench to support it. Even if you have to build a bench from scratch and spend $50 and an hour doing it, in the end you'll have a bench you can use for other stuff and the right stand for your engine. I think I recognize that HF stand. It's the one that 360 Jeep motor was on that I got for parts. As we wheeled the engine over to my truck one of the wheels fell off on the bottom of it and we had to use a floor jack to move it any more. It didn't come unscrewed, it just *broke*. Because in my "professional" opinon...it um..... SUCKED. Do it right the first time and there at least won't be an _unexpected_ second time.

I've got a VW engine sitting on a stand very much like that right now. I had to use three of the four mounts on the stand for lack of room, and I'd have to do something a bit different if I wanted to crack the case apart (I don't), but it works just peachy. Get yourself a length of 5/16" all-thread and a sack full of nuts and flat washers at the hardware store. It's much easier to hack off lenghts of all-thread than it is to find bolts and nuts just the right size to bolt the endine up.

So with some twisting and turning you can get three of the four mounts to line up with the engine? Sounds pretty good.

I bought the Harbor Freight one and the bench mount (from JC Whitney for $19.95) -- threw away the bench mount and welded the tube into the pipe on the Harbor Freight stand -- holds a fully dressed T IV engine.

You are without a question right. I'm kinda surprised (picture of me blinking rapidly, eyebrows moving up and down forehead like twin caterpillars) that no one makes a simple adapter thingie for this purpose.

Ya know, they DO make a VW engine adapter that fits in your average everyday generic engine stand. Sorta like the bench mount except it has the correct size tube to fit in an engine stand. Has the holes for the locking pin when you rotate it. Think I bought mine at JC Whitney years ago. Haven't looked for recently. Maybe I should say they USED TO make 'em. Been using mine for years.

I don't think you'll need anything other than possibly some long bolts.

I've never had a chance to use one of the WV type stands, so I'm not sure how it stacks up. The VW stand appears to only grab two of the engine's four points, which always seemed like a weak arrangement to me, but it obviously works fine. But yeah, the one I have mounted isn't going anywhere.
