Re: What's a title worth?

I thought you meant just a title. Not a car and title. If it were just a title it would be worth nothing or jail time if one were to alter a vehicle to match the title.... Hmmmm >>> free cable tv, heating and air conditioning, laundry service, all meals catered, college education, get to sleep in, etc etc. Not a bad deal! I just don't like the idea of being someones bitch. ;-)

Georgia doesn't require atitle just a bill of sale. Its not for me, but i do know many ppl / restored cars who need titles, its a technicality.

How about btlmex cars. New Mexican beetles w/ an old chasis! someone could swap the body and still be legal. Its completely legal, but a loophole in the US automotive registration process.

It depends on the state you live in whether or not you need a title. The beetle mex car bodies were fitted onto an old chassis. Therefore they are the same old car according to DMV. However to the rest of us it is not the same car. In Ohio a title is needed. Altering a vehicle vin plate to match a title is I believe a felony. However building a vehicle to be titled from parts from many vehicles is legal. But it must go thru inspection by the state highway patrol if you want to register it for on road use. There are certain requirements that must be met in order to get a self build title. I am currently going thru it now with the '77 baja. What vin number will they use if there are several vin numbers? Who knows! Will they attach a fresh vin number? Who knows! I do have a clean title for my '71 that I am taking parts off of. Can I use the title to my '71 for my '77? Only for proof of ownership for the parts I remove from the '71 to put on the '77. All other parts I must must show a receipt. Remember though that is in Ohio. Other state laws will vary. Could I take the vin number off of the '71 and put them on the '77? Not legally. I only know of 4 places where there are numbers on the 70's model type 1's that they will be interested in. They are - dash, chassis tunnel under the rear seat, front trunk next to the hood lock mechanism and the engine. Sometimes there are other places where these so called secret numbers are stamped. If they are on the type 1's I have no idea where they are.

All I am saying is keep it legal....I'm not insinuating anything either...So don't get offended thinking I am...

BTW if I had a line on a beetlemex body that needed a chassis I would jump on the deal. Or any other project like a fiberglass buggy for that matter. But if I were to do it in this state it would still have to go thru inspection for a proper title. :-|

Will I ever buy a vehicle witout a title again. Probably not. But this '77 was so cheap and I needed what it had. A good chassis and body. My '71 has everything else...

Keep posting the finds. Someone might find use of something you post. I did. Sneaks posted the '77 I am working on now.

I don't know when VW started this but on my '72 there is also a sticker inside the left side door jamb that has the VIN.
