Sandblasting experiences.

Just wanted to share my experiences. Bought a low cost sand blast pot a few weeks ago, now finally found the time to try it out properly (pot of the $300 price class, average) Had the great luck that a company was blasting on location nearby and that i could get all the old grid for free. (27000 kg!) That grid was rough, but became too fine for them to use, but for the purpose i need it for it´s just fine enough. First victim was a fan shroud, rusted up and crappy. I took the alternator off and blasted it. What a result, no rust at all anymore, unit looks great. Finished off with flat black heat resistant paint. Next victim, a large power box we want to use for another purpose. Same result, nice smooth finish, after painting it looked like new! Third victim, engine mounting bar. Same result as well. I think i´m addicted, i like the finish it gives.

Forgive me for sounding "alarmist", but you probably have no way of knowing what the composition of the used grit is. Perhaps it is benign, but please do this GOOGLE search:

Ok, may want to add that i use a dust protective suit. The kind that gets clean air fed from a tube, the inside stays clean, so no dust. I heard of the risks before, that´s why i bought that suit, and the cost was really not so high as a lot may think, in USD count on about $120

You *are* priming these before painting, right? It's also a good idea to metal-prep them before priming... HTH, ~ Paul aka "Tha Driver"

Of course. Metal prep seems overkill to me, but i did a primer.

Yeah, you can get by without metal prep if the parts (& conditions) are good & dry. One of the biggest problems with blasting is moisture in the airline. Sounds like you're doing things right. ~ Paul aka "Tha Driver"
