Springs for Shoe/Pads on Front Brakes.

I got the rear springs that hold on the shoes/pad on with no problem but haveint grouble with the front brakes. I purchased the universal brake tool. but my hands just aren't that strong to push it in long enought to get the pin lined up. I got one of the springs on but it is leaning to one side. It looks secure but not happy with the way it looks. Any ideas? I may get my dad to help me put them on. I tried oputting some tape in the back to hold the pin while I push and that seemed to help but couldn't get the metal piece with the hold lines up with the pin just right.

Thanks Steven

are these new springs from a brake hardware kit? if so, most kits will have two different length pins and two styles of "cups" that have different offsets...make sure you use the proper cups with the proper length pins...the spring should not be overly tight when locked into the cup....not uncommon for the cup/springs to sit funny until the entire brake set is assembled, then the assembly tends to even and line everything up...i don't use the brake tool for installing these parts i typically use plain ole run of the mill pliers...been working for them for nearly 20 years so far....

i don't

ditto for me. not smart enuf to figger that damn thing out. i use needle nose pliers to compress, grab and then turn. a little hard on the palms of the hands this way ( the ends of the handles dig in ) but after 18 years of construction work, it doesn't bother me much.

try seating the shoes by hitting both sides at the same time with the aforementioned palms to help straighten things up a little.

remember to back off the adjusters before putting the drums on, and to pump the brake pedal a few times while adjusting to help center the shoes.

just my 2 cents worth

How do I use the Pliers? I tired using some they weren't nettle nose but the spring kept poping off and I'd have to go find it. Going to see if my dad can come down tomorrow and help me. That way he can push in as I guide the pin. Maybe I will finish the frint brakes minus the Bleeding of the MC and Front Brakes. Going to wait till after I install new pan and Brake line along the length of the car.

THanks for all the advise.

Thanks Steven

If you are having a hrad enough time that you'ved posted this much about it, it might be time to make sure the parts are extremely clean, and put a little silicon sealer on the spring, thus glueing it to the keeper. This way, the spring will not keep popping off. I use my fingers as much as a pair of pliers anymore. I just bare the short term pain and hold and push. After I do the two springs on one side I give my fingers a break though. Don't try this at home unless you have lots of heavy calouses on your hands/fingers.

Different year models have different brakes. Some have wider shoes and therefore need longer pins. Check that you have correct set. There are some sets that have all three lengths but the ones I've bought have just had one lenght - the one for the model.

If it was fairly easy installing the rear brakes, are you sure that you did not accidentally install the front pins to the rear?

I can't remember where the pins from the rear came from. I bought some parts off ebay Shoes, Master Cylinder, Wheel Cylinder. And for the fornt brakes I bought the front spring kit from Aircooled.net

I'll try and take some pics tomorrow and post.

With my dad's help. Him holding the Shoes and the pin I was able to get the springs on. I went to put on the Drumps but the shoes are touch the outer edges of it and can't be put on. I tried adjusting the star adjusted but they would't budge. I will be posting pics soon to

If the star adjusters wont budge, you definately want to take the shoes off one more time and do something to the adjusters. After you get them loose, take them off, clean the surfaces and lubricate with something. I used copper paste and it has worked ok. You need the adjusters to work smoothly to adjust your brakes without ruining the back plates, your knuckles and your nerves.
