Stupid Fuel Filter

Don't to this. :)

I got the '58 on the road after storage. Amazingly, after installing a new battery and turning it over a few times to pull some fuel into the pump, it started and ran beautifully... after the oil-fog I sprayed into the cylinders burned off.

A toast to Mica, the original owner. (Thanks, Mica, if you are still a reader.)

Then I smelled gas. Powerful smell. Killed engine. Gas was dripping out the end of the fuel line filter. YES, I did what I know was a short-cut. I put the filter in the engine bay, but since most of the system is hard-line... well (Aw, Joey, don't jump all over me, okay?)

The point is some of these otherwise excellent filters come with 3/8" and

1/4" plastic pipe/line fittings. You screw in the fitting that works for your lines.

They are not strong! Replace them with brass fittings. I switched to a solid steel filter further removed from the bay.

Just darned glad to be on the road again!

(I'd love to break into this engine to find out what it really is. I timed a

1/4 mile at the airport. It's as fast as my Raby powered GTII. How depressing. Something's very wrong there.)

congrats John...enjoy the ride.....i cruised around in the Karmann Ghia a bit today....the 68 bug is up on stands at the moment....i narrowed my front suspension(5") and added air ride similar to the front "kit" from airkewld.com....then i put all new brakes and dropped spindles on the front...drove it half a mile then backed it under the ragged carport and dropped the engine for rear air conversion and some much needed bodywork....
