Thicker Rear Torsion Bar: Effect?

I have 1977 Beetle. I just purchased a set of adjustible spring plates AND new torsion bars. I did so to help compensate for the new American Eagle Alloy wheels that basically moved the tires outward and closer to the fender edges. I figure the adjustible spring plates can give me some additional clearance at the rear. Now for my question: the new torsion bars are 26mm in diameter vs the original 22 or 23mm diameters for a 1977 standard bug.

WHAT WILL THE THICKER TORSION BARS DO TO THE RIDE? WILL THEY MAKE THE RIDE NOTICEABLY HARDER?
