Vw Starters

Apr 29, 2006 3 Replies

All,

Thanks for all the help recently, I have gleaned enuf info to make my head hurt. (70 bug).

Had to replace my starter today. Found out that the folks at autozone have just revamped their POS database. Interestingly enuf, the starters and solenoid are going for 39 bucks.

So, if anyone needs one, act quick before they figure it out.

( I actually tried to tell the guy that they go for a hundred and up, but he said "the computer is always right", so I dont feel guilty. Its not a bosch but it works )

Take care, and thanks again.

Trey.

You'll find out their lifetime warranty is very short lived before you'll be taking it back for another. They don't rebuild them - they clean the cores and maybe fix a small problem and that's it. You'd actually be better off with a used one or replacing the brushes in your old one IMHO!

We went through 7 NAPA starters on our '71 standard. The last one they gave us lasted for 8 starts and then refused to turn over ever again. We talked with the store owner and he said he would check with the NAPA "technical" people. Their esteemed answer to NAPA store owner was - "Give him a Bosch!" They did and it has worked for 10 years now.

Fweem.

Thanks all for the responses, I am still new at this. Only droppeed the engine 3 times. But I was broke and desparate. Thanks for setting the record straight. Will save coin for the Bosch. Trey.
