What oil for colder day's

Hey guy's,

I was wondering what type of oil to use in these cold day's. I still have the 'summer' oil in the sump which is never refreshed. I know it's not a wise thing but i only needed to top it once a while :)

Next februari the 22nd is our 'big day' and i'm using my bug as our wedding transportation (which i normaly only use in the summer) The weatherforcast is predicting a nasty winter, so i think i might change the oil? On the other hand, i'm swapping this engine with a new one this spring...

Should i change the oil or just go for it? My biggest fear is that the bug will break down or something like that... :-(

Thanks in advance, Roger

Is it garaged ?

Biggest problem is when its started from cold and the oil is thick. If its in a garage then it isn't as bad, as it's not as cold as outside.

What sort of temps are you expecting? What do you use as a 'summer' oil ?

When did you last change it - not just top it up ?

You know you should change it regularly dont you ?

I hope all goes well with the wedding anyway !

Run it until hot. Dump whatever oil you have in there. Rinse out the trap. Replace with 'winter' oil (Mobil-1 15W/50 is fine) Get married

Hey Rich,

Had to look at the bottle to make sure what type of oil it is; Shell 15W40. Also written: all weather oil, so there goes my question... (look before you ask, Roger!)

I only changed the oil when i finished the bug in 2001... afterwards only topping... I do know it is not the way to do it, and sure will do it correct with the new engine. The current engine also has a working engine-case heater for the extreme cold day's (since it is originally from Sweden) the type that sticks in the bottom of the engine where the oil filter/drain used to be. I think i will keep it overnight under power (220v) just to be sure.

Thanks for your input, and sure hope all goes well too! 8-)

thanks Remco, appreciate it.

If the bug does what it's suposed to do, i will live through the day :) In my home town there is an airbase (Gilse - Rijen) with some old time aircooled enthousiasts.... Spitfire, Harvard, Piper and some other post war planes. We are invited to take our fotoshoot among those planes.... COOL... Never ocured to me that there were also Aircooled flat-four in planes.

OH, i'm one happy dude.....

Motor oil has a shelf life. Change your oil. Unless, of course, you want to start your marriage in a very bad way.

Yeah i think that is the best thing to do... a couple of euro's for oil isn't a waste for a day full of joy.

Thanks, Roger

Very cool! I mentioned this to Cassandra and she mentioned you are getting a very understanding wife. While mine is very understanding, but probably wouldn't have let me do that one. :)

Nogmaals bij voorbaat onze best wensen!!
