'89 240 kickdown issue (different question)

By different question I mean to say that I know where to adjust, I just have a question about something I did to it.

I pulled the cable very far out and almost forcedly (I don't quite remember anymore why though, trying to troubleshoot something else) farther out than it would like to have gone and it didn't like to shift into fourth gear.

My question is, could I have damaged the cable at all in doing this and if so how could I tell? Brickboards section on the AW-70 tranny's is great for adjusting it but I don't know what the "cable sheath " is.

It will shift fine after being driven for a while, after many frequent stops and go's to 42MPH, etc. And if the car hasn't been used in a while (a few hours) it will be bad at shifting again until driven or if I floor it to just before the bottom of the line and let go, then it will shift to fourth.

Thank you, a very confused Hector

The cable sheath is the outer piece - the sleeve. Cable is located inside the sheath.
