'92 740

Hi,

just got this car, has only 41,000 on it. Twice it hasn't started in freezing weather. A mechanic in Brooklyn tried to fix it, another here in cleveland. About to take it to specialists, the Swedish Solution. Anyone have this problem, or can identify it? Thanks.

You need to supply more info, does it turn over? If so, fuel pump relay, if not, starter motor.

Look to see if the warning lights (alternator, engine temp, etc.) come on like they should when it doesn't work. If not, it's a good bet the ignition switch is failing. It often appears in very cold weather first. For the ignition switch, which isn't terribly expensive (under $100 from IPD, probably between $100 and $200 from Volvo) and easy to change, replacing it on suspicion is an option. My sympathy to you and the mechanics - it's hard to fix something that is working okay most of the time.

Sometimes it is the Cold Start injector that has stopped working for some reason or can be to do with ignition system.

If it's a US spec car it won't have a cold start injector, I've never seen a

700 series with one.

check if this car has a pnp switch. keeps the car from starting in anything but neutral and park; jiggle if needed.

only a no crank condition. if your motor or starter turns look elsewhere

If it has LH fuel injection it will have a coldstart injector irrespective of where it was meant to be sold. My Green book wiring diagrams all show cold start injectors for 740 USA/Canada market.

Cheers, Peter.

There's an LH injected car in my driveway right now with no cold start injector, my mom and my dad each have one as well and so do several other guys I know, they're all between '85 and '88 but I'm absolutely positive none of them have cold start injectors, I've had the intake manifolds off of several of them. I've also done quite a bit of junkyarding. It's possible that one of the later versions of LH has it but I've never seen one. If it's shown in the green book then you're either looking at the wrong year, or the book is wrong.

It is indicated in the subject that the actual 740 is a model year 92. At least some 740 Turbo from 90-91 has a cold start valve. If you haven't seen one you might want to know what it looks like:

It is the same in ALL my wiring diagram Green Books produced by Volvo (most of them are for LHD USA/Canada market vehicles). Seek and ye shall find. The only ones that do not are those using LH 2.2. As you state the car in question is a 1992? 740 it will have a Cold Start Injector (Valve) as it has LH 2.4. The only 740s which do not have a Cold Start Injector are the

16-valve twin-cam B204 and B234 engines. Even those with Rex/Regina, CI and Motronic systems have a Cold Start Injector.

Cheers, Peter.

Ah, I've never had a car with LH 2.4, they may very well have a CSI. You stated that *all* LH injected cars have them though, which is certainly not the case, LH-2.2 seems to be much more common than 2.4.
