I've got the exact same problem in a wagon, I'm planning on pulling the seat out to see if I can fix it.

Hopefully somebody else here already knows though...

I found a page that seems applicable and lines up with what my mechanic told me he was going to need to do. I don't really care to do this one myself...but it's good to know why.

The cable doesnt; need to be replaced unless the square ends of the innter cable are chewed up too much. The sheath is a thidk-walled plastic tube, and the metal ends are just crimped on. Over time, one or both of these ends work loose, effectively making the sheath longer.

You can "repair" the cable by heating the ends a bit and pushing them back onto the sheath so the inner cable protrudes about 5mm at each end,. I did this to mine about 2 years ago and it's still holding up.

Second suggestion. Instead of using hog rings to clip the front and back parts of the seat covering together at the bottom, use heavy duty cable ties. They're a lot easier to get on in this restricted space,.
