Accelerator cable disengages...

Hi,

My accelerator cable disengages from the throttle pulley when I am on the highway and I have cruise control engaged, rendering my gas pedal useless. It has happened 2-3 times in the last month or so.

I have to pull over, turn the car off, open the hood and wrap the disengaged accelerator cable back onto the throttle pulley and everything is back to normal.

Any thoughts/suggestions as to what is happeneing, or a fixer-upper tip?

1991 Volvo 240 Sedan, Automatic transmission, 116,000 miles +/-

Thanks, Mehmet

There are small springs inside that triple pulley assembly that keep the throttle cable tensioned when the cruise control is in use (and vice versa), my guess is the spring is broken, or maybe just a little lubrication is needed.

You might want to go to a wrecking yard and get a replacement.

Make sure the throttle cable is adjusted correctly:
