Brand of Oil for '92 240 automatic

What brand and weight of oil do you use in your Volvos? I have been using Valvoline 10-30 for the last 6 years. Was talking to a Volvo mechanic yesterday who said he uses only Penzoil 10-30 and that he thought the Valvoline breaks down quicker. I live in the south where summers are hot and humid and winters are fairly mild. What are your opinions? JB (remove parenthesis on reply address to reply directly)

Personally of the conventional oils I would use Pennzoil, Havoline or Castrol GTX. Another interesting option in your case would be a heavy duty 15W-40 like Chevron Delo or Mobil Delvac. The slightly thicker oil might be a good bet for an older vehicle in hot climates. Personally I would stay away from the 10W-40 oils. If you want the thicker oil, use a 15W-40. For quite some period of time this was Volvo's recommendation for warm climate conditions. What does your owners manual say for weight?

I use Chevron 10w30 in the NA cars and Castrol 5w30 synthetic in the turbos, mostly because Costco has cases of both for a good price. There's really not a whole lot of difference between one brand and another.

Mobil-1 15-50 since the first break-in oil change.

I use the cheapest "decent" oil I can find blowing out the doors on a coupon special at Schuck's Auto Parts, usually Chevron or Shell, at 49 cents each.

I use a quality oil filter (Mann) and change every thousand to fifteen hundred miles.

This is the best thing you can do: fresh filter, clean oil, frequent changes.
