When starting the engine, it makes a loud (very loud) whining sound. It tends to last 10-15 seconds, then stops. I was told it is the vacuum system (sounds like it may be an airpump of some sort), but it seems awfully loud to be part of the design.
Has anyone else encountered this?

Your car is still under warranty. If the dealer claims the noise is normal, get them to show you one of their demos that makes the same noise. If, as one would expect, it's not a normal noise, ask them to fix it.
I have the same model and year and it does not whine. get the dealer to fix it
