Hot under the hood

My 740 turbo overheated under the hood so much so the air con stopped working and the brakes jammed on . When the brakes jammed once before in very heavy traffic I replaced the vacuum valve on the vacuum brake booster with a new one and replaced the hose seemed to work fine afterwards .In heavy stop start traffic under the hood got hot I had left the relay off which switches the condenser air conditioner fan on . The air con worked fine after activating the relay fan and the brakes worked well . Now I have insulated the valve and hose to the vacuum boost so that there is less heat from the Turbo . Any comments re the brakes ABS jamming on but releasing when jabbed with the brake pedal in heavy traffic ?


I've never even heard of that happening. All of the underhood equipment is designed to tolerate high temperatures, if you're insulating things, you're masking whatever fault exists rather than fixing it.

I guess the relay for the air con was the issue as I turned off the fan so it wouldn't run the battery low . An auto electrician suggested it should be on all the time when the air con is on in summer . But it sucks the power out put of the battery . I since have beefed up the earthing wires and connections which seems to have helped .I am not on r12 I am on 134a which is less efficient . Once I turned the fan back on all seems well . I will not know till the next traffic snarl on a hot day . It seems there is a connection between brakes air and heat under the hood .

I would take a look at the ABS controller and/or relay, assuming the car has ABS. One of those might have some cracked solder joints or a component that has become heat sensitive.

The conditioner compressor is powered by the engine. You also have alternator to supply the power when the engine is running.

I think he's talking about the auxiliary electric fan on the condenser, that draws quite a large load. I believe it normally only comes on when the condenser temperature rises beyond a certain point.
