How do you check for codes on a 1994 850?

Is there a laymans way to check for codes on a 1994 850, or must it be done with a scan tool? Since this vehicle is pre OBD II, I would assume there is a way to do it with flashing led's, or even with the digital clock on the dash.

Thanks,

Under the hood, on the front of the computer box are two small connector blacks, marked A and B. The A side has a wire wiith a plug, a button, and a LED. With the ignition on, you plug the wire into a hole (A2 for engine) and press the button for about 1 second and release. The LED will blink some number of times for the first number, pause, then blink again for the second and third digits.

1-1-1 is no faults found. There may be more than one code stored, You have to press the button again after the first one displays to see if there's another one. Once they've all displayed, you can clear with a log press (5-10 seconds, then wait til the light comes on, and do another long press.

Here's a picture of the connectors and the service light clearing method:

To get all of them, and the corrective actions / troubleshooting procedures, you need the factory service manuals. Forunately, these are still available for 94 models. (But not for anything past 1998)

The lack of owner-affordable service data for new Volvos is the primary reason I won't be buying one.
