I have a 1998 V70 AWD (manual transmission) from Ontario Canada, that I want to register in California, USA while I am studying here for the next two years.
I'm in California now, but still have Ontario plates and permit; I'm worried that I should be registering my car here to avoid any problems..
Has anyone been through this process at all before? What about for a simliar model/year of car?
My question to you is why would you want to register the car in California for a 2 year temporary stay. The only reason I can think of would be to show you were residing in California to obtain in-state tuition rates. Otherwise, I would just keep the car registered in Canada.
I agree with you that is a pain to import and register a car in the US for only a temporary stay. However I was stopped by the CHP the other day and given a ticket for failure to register in California.
Apparently within 20 days of taking up residency one must obtain a California driver's license and registration.
