I've a '97 850 wagon, and it has started to make a load humming sound whenever I turn on the air fan (for heating). The sound disappears when I turned off the fan.
Does anybody know the cause?

The bearing in the motor for the fan is bad. You can try fixing it with lube, but a new one is probably the way to go.

It depends on the car and whether you do the work yourself. On the 850 an experienced guy can do the heater motor in less than an hour.
