"New"1984 760 Turbo

Just bought an 84' 760 Turbo from a friend, it has had it's engine replaced within the last 2 years, and some suspension work done recently.

Being my first Volvo, I gotta tell ya I LOVE this car!

It has a few electrical quirks, (window switches, fuel gage works backwords, nothing I can't live with, and I do most of the minor repairs myself.)

It sure drives well, considering it's gotta have over 200K miles on it.

Not a squeak or rattle when driving it, feels solid as a rock, and is extremely fast for a car this size/engine.

Wondered if someone here could point me to a couple of links for reliable parts, like window switches and such.

Believe it or not, my most pressing need for parts at this point are a couple of lenses for the tail light and front turn lamp, cosmetically this car is nearly perfect.

TIA, this group is great from what I have read so far!!!

4ax.com:

Doesn't it feel strangely cool to drive a car older than anyone else you know would ever dream of driving?

I have found that there is a huge assortment of parts availabe on Ebay. IPDUSA.com, fcpgroton.com, and volvoworld.com are great places to have a look as well.

Good Luck,

Nice find, that's a good car, only thing lacking in the early models is the center brakelight in the rear window and also the window uses the old style defroster wires rather than the super thin ones embedded in the glass. If you could find a way to remove a newer rear window without breaking it (there's a *ton* of '87's in junkyards) you could swap that easily enough. Turn and tail lights are hard to find used but new aftermarket ones are reasonably priced. For the parts you mention try

there's a couple other online retailers too.

Thanks,

I actually found just the backup lamp lens I need, which had broken.

Not wanting to buy the whole tail lamp assy., I figured I'd build one out of a white lense of similar size, and just glue it on.

Lo and behold, I found a site with replacement lenses that can be glued in place onto the tail lamp assembly, the very thing I had planned to do, without hunting for a proper sized lense.

Around 16.00, can't beat that.

Think it was at ipdusa.com or somewhere, will have to check my favorites again.

This must be a real common problem, I have seen a few like mine on the road with the same missing lenses...

I appreciate the site info!

Thanks

It truly is, and so far everyone who"s seen it is impressed, everybody wants to drive the thing.

First one that finds me an owners manual gets to take it for a spin.

What the heck are all these switches for, anyhow???

How bout that one that looks like a radio antenna or a tree shaped thingie?

Eventually I will find out.

And I WILL be dismantling that lamp-burnout warning light, that one is driving me crazy.

Thanks for the links Richard!

That's to force the power antenna to stay down, say if you want to listen to a tape or CD while you go through a carwash. I don't need it anymore though as my CD player lowers it when only the CD is being used.

Why? That's an amazingly useful doohickey, you just have to get it working right. Make sure you have matching bulbs on both sides, clean grounds, and clean sockets. With that ingenious little indicator you know at a glance when a brakelight or other taillight is out before you get a ticket for it or get rear ended. I'm not exactly sure why they bothered to make it work for the headlights, but for anything on the rear end of the car it's great.

Try this;

Remove all of the bulbs. That should put the "bulb" light out Put the lights back in a pair at the time.

The detector compares the current of the Left brake light vs. the Right brake light. If the current is different the Bulb light lights.

There may be 2 or more problems so keep going with pairs until all work correctly.

As a last resort change the big round red thing on the relay tray. It is almost never a problem so just get a cheep one from the local U pick yard.

Good Luck

Actually since this is an '84, maybe someone put in a later bulb failure sensor that expects a third brakelight? This would be something to check if stepping on the brake pedal makes the warning light come on.

Thanks, Vr and James;

Think it may be the ground route.

It's not actually constant, a couple of days it was off completely, and one day it went out as I depressed the brake.

I do like the "pull em all out" replace a pair at a time idea, I think there is a mismatch somewhere, and I have been replacing the tail lamps a pair at a time.

One of the rear lamps has a bad connection on the thin panel that overlays the tail lamp section, who thought of that concept, with the printed circuit board on the back of the assembly??

Seems like an invitation for dirty contacts. Cleaned it up a bit with a quick dose of contact cleaner, where the bulb socket makes contact with the copper trace on the baclk of the assembly. May need to go and do them all to correct this, if the pair swap doesn't work.

It's actually just a minor annoyance, and a good challenge I guess for my first Volvo.

You folks are the best.

The circuit board actually works pretty well, remember your car is almost 20 years old, it's not unexpected for there to be a few dirty contacts by now.
