Since it goes in and out by itself, time to get under the auto with a pair of pliers and clean and tighten the terminals on the solenoid. Youcan verify the problem by having the ignition ON, engine OFF, in 4th gear with the dash light on.
Wiggling the wires at the solenoid will cause the solenoid to click when the connection is made and broken.

Does the dash indicator drop in and out too? It could be soldering in the relay, this is the usual cause.
No it stays green the whole time. It only drops out for a couple of seconds at most.
Yeah check the wires on the solenoid as another person mentioned, also check and clean the fuse in the fuse panel, it's the same one that does the rear window defogger.

Have you checked the wires going from youre gear knob down throug the floor to youre gear box, under the rubber or leather, whatever kind you've got. This used to break on my car due to the movment of the gear stick.
