I recently had the bottom suspension control arms rotor replaced. The ball joint to the steering knuckle was bad. It's a 95 850 so they had to replace the whole unit, new bushings and all. I looked under yesterday and the skid pad had become detached on the side towards the outside of the car. Is this a riveted in part or screwed in? Can it be re-attached without replacement of the control arm?

Are you talking about the little area that appears to limit travel of the steering?
I remember that I took a S70 out for a test drive (same stuff underneath I guess) and it was creaking as I maxed the steering (lock), one pad was greased, the other was dry.
You can reweld something on there, but have someone do it correctly.
You change the temper of the steel with heat.
The control arm is most likely forged if I recall correctly.
I guess I'll see what the shops says, they're honest and it was JUST replaced. I think they'll take care of me. I'm just sort of wondering if I'm line for a new one now or whether this is common/fixable.

Mine are pop riveted, and on one of my replacements the rivets failed quickly as well.
A few carefully minutes with a drill and right sized pop rivets fixed it up, no need to replace the arm.

The shop replaced the rivet for me, no cost. The repair looks good and probably is stouter than the original. They were quite agreeable about it too.
