We have begun to have intermittent occurences where the speedometer abruptly "dies" (falls to 0 mph). Any troubleshooting tipsor advice regarding chronic problems would be appreciated. Thanks.

Sound like a bad connection. It could be inside the speedometer head, but most likely is the connection at the speedometer cluster or at the rear speed sensor that is mounted in the differential. The ABS and cruise control use the same speed signal, so if you have either of these and they work when your speed dies, you can eliminate everything except the speedo and its connection.
