Took to small local garage (where the owner runs a V70) and he said it was rear shock absorbers. Replaced both (£240) and noise gone. How come the main dealer said it was the exhaust and would be £500 and suggested living with the noise as the exhaust was in excellent condition.
So much for the main dealer, their technician and the technicians boss.
