V70 - what's that cover in the centre of the roof?

Hi,

I have a 2003 V70 and during my trip home tonight thought about the possibility of roof mounted DVD for the kids. I looked up to where you would probably fit the screen and noticed a plastic cover in the roof lining. On removal I find the back of the cover has some covered electronics and a cable attached.

Any ideas what it is?

Thanks!

Yes, you've been secretly bugged by the security services.

You know even you brits are suspect in this post 9-11 world. Tony Blair might do something silly to keep his office you know, like pull your guys out of the slaughter house in Iraq. The US Department of homeland security has EVERY Volvo in the world bugged, it being a well known fact that commie leftie pinkos own Volvos.

Along those lines I picked up my Volvo from the shop--they sell land rover, Lexus, Volvo, BMW, Mini, Audi and other high line used cars a few years old.

The woman who returned the loaner I was to get, a Camry said it was ok but no good for the autobahn. I asked how about the piripherique (sp I am sure), the ring road around Paris.

This set off a long conversation of the joys of France and how we both supported Kerry, our conversation in both French and English.

There was a BMW owner who had several Bush stickers on his car who looked like he ate some bad brie or something during this 5 minute French Fest! LOL LOL.

Ok serious now--what kind of cable is it? I do not know the answer but with some clues might be able to help guess...

I'll take a pic and come back with a URL later today. Gut feeling is it's the alarm sensor.

It was about the vintage of your car - or a couple of years earlier - that Volvo began to offer a sensor that was part of the security package and detected movement within the passenger compartment. Which they seem to try and keep such bits in/about the dash, I'd suspect that this is what you're looking at.

On the other hand, a cousin has a late model Lincoln (I like him anyway) and found that a similar plastic patch on the roof liner covered some of the works of the sunroof. So, a couple of thoughts to consider . . .

Depending on which security package you have, it is the sensor for either the interior motion sensor and/or the level/inclination sensor.
