My wife was driving our 93 240 approximately 35 mph and a lady made the infamous left turn directly into her path. The wife said she was not even able to apply the brakes before the impact. My wife, 3 year old, and 1 year old came out unscathed. The toyota she hit wadded up and the other driver did not fair as well. I am very happy I stuck to my guns and did not traded this old tank in for a new economy car. Thanks Volvo ! AJ
I heard a segment on a news program last night about rollover type accidents. Guess which SUV maker added the 15-20 lbs of metal to the roof so that it could survive in stock form?
It is good to know your family are safe from the accident with the protection from volvo, which just reconfirmed my belef on volvo car safety. I got a similar experience which made me to buy a volvo for myself without second thoughts. About 2 yrs ago around Christmas, my family went shopping on my brother's 84 240 GL and I was the driver. It suddenly snowed hard but I didn't pay enough attention to slow down due to lack of snow driving experience. At a curly slope I drove at 50 km/hr and suddenly I lost control. My volvo spinned for 360 degree and hit the curb at the right side. After a huge bang it climed over the curb and landed on the grassland by the road. Everyone on the car had no time to react, but the seat belt held us tightly and nothing happened to us. I thought the tire and rim would be a mess. I opened the door, checked the hitting side of the volvo, there was not even a scratch. I restared the engine, drove back home, slowly this time.
I just found a local 1997 850 GLT to replace the 240. I think it will do a great job and eliminate the "I like this car but it's slow" line the wife had about the 240. AJ
I didn't think the 850 GLT's did, the turbos say 850 Turbo on the back. Also back in the early 80's you could get a 240 GLT which was essentially identical to the 240 Turbo but with the normally aspirated engine.
In North America, the 93-96 850 GLT had the normally aspirated, 2435 cc,
20 Valve motor. In 1997 the 850 GLT got the 2435 cc light pressure turbo motor. This light pressure turbo motor was also in the 1998-2000 S70 GLT and V70 GLT.
At least in the US the 1996 GLT (I think that was the first year it came out) was not a turbo. It became a turbo in 1997. I know because I have a '96 GLT.
Ah the mystery solved. Volvo had a perfectly good model numbering system up until '80 or so, and beyond that most things still made sense until the 760, why'd they have to go and screw that up?
