01 Golf Brake Change help: reset rear caliper pistons?

I'm attempting my first maintenance on my new-to-me '01 Golf TDI: The rear pads need replacement. Shouldn't be a big deal, I've been doing my own brakes for years. Question is, how do you retract the rear calipers? Some instructions I've seen seem to indicate using a big press-type tool to push the caliper piston back in. Some instructions say the cheapo $5 version of the tool works fine. Still others indicate using a block that sort of plugs in to the caliper piston to twist it back into place.

Help....?

Push and turn clockwise just like the rears of most GM cars with disc brakes. You can find the tool at sears.

FWIW: I helped a buddy do his 00 Jetta a month ago. When I arrived he was trying to press the pistons back in without turning (and getting nowhere). I had read about having to rotate the piston while pushing in, but even armed with that knowledge, we were unable to do it. We ended up getting the tool from Autozone...in fact they let us borrow it at no charge!

If I do the rear brakes in my wife's 00 Passat, I will probably just get the tool ahead of time. I don't know what the trick is for doing it by hand.

The rear calipers have to be threaded back in, you can't just push them in with a c-clamp or cheap caliper tool. You can buy a universal rear caliper tool that attaches to a 3/8 drive ratchet and crank the piston in with that. Corey From VWsport.com NNTP Gateway

I just had to ask that question here a month or so ago. Go to your local AutoZone, if there are any by you, and you can rent the tool for free. Don't bother trying to do it with any other set-up, just go get the right tool -- trust me on this.
