1984 Scirocco Purchase

Hi,

I am planning on purchasing a '84 Scirocco. What do I need to be on the look out for. Iam mechincally inclined and capable, how easy are these to work on?

Thanks in advance, Steve

I have an 83 and ive found them really easy to work on.They go like hell, but the clutch is a pain in the @#$ to change (typical vw).Is the one your interested in 1.6 or 1.8?.

They are better than most water-cooled VWs of that vintage (to work on), are very fast, and when running properly, run exceedingly well. But, with all due respect, get two. One to drive, one for tinkering as that will be the way of it.

Good vehicles! Easy to work on.

Look out for any rust and electrical problems.

good luck! later, dave (One out of many daves)

butt easy. I sold one a couple years ago and have been regretting it ever since.

Only real problems you may have are rear wheel bearings going bad (they're a little undersized and need to be regularly repacked) and on mine the transmission ended up being replaced because of worn bearings (at 200K miles) other than that they are great little cars! You will probably be able to to 90+% of the work it will require yourself, unless you simply choose to let a mechanic take care of it.

One problem I had was the fuel pump relay(#4?) and oil sensor. Nothing major other than that. Good call on the wheel berrings, forgot about those. Good luck.
