1987 VW Vanagon (Camper), 2.1L Automatic

We have the intermittent starter problem with this Vanagon that we have been told is common to the species. When hot, either after a long hill-climb or on a very hot day, the starter will flat-out not function, not even a *CLICK* until the vehicle cools, usually some time between 15 minutes and an hour. After which time it will invariably start. We were also told that there is a "Chevy-Relay" modification that can be done to aleviate this.

So:

A. Is this a common problem? B. What is the proper fix?

Thanks in advance.

Can't remember, my T25 is a diesel so AFAIK not affected. Google for 'Vanagon Syndrome'
