1990 passat

Aug 15, 2004 1 Replies

SO I have an opportunity to buy a 1990 passat.

Good: no visible rust. at all. brand new front end, brand dynaflow exhaust, new wheels, brakes, etc. previous owner put about 3-5 grand into the car is the last year.

Bad: headliner is toast. rest of interior perfect.

electrical system isnt working correctly. Some of the running lights stay on.

Starts _hard_ and runs like s*it. If you open the throttle fast it dies, but seems ok if you open it slowly.

idles at about 1000rpm, poorly.

Suggestions?

oh, and ideas on price?

Cheers,

Matt.

You did not mention if it had any extras, sunroof, a/t, a/c etc.

Vehicles with problems I would offer very little $$$.

I vote for paying only $400-500 with these unknown problems! It may have serious problems, or you may get lucky and easily and cheaply solve it's problems. Might need a good tune-up with a look at the ISV, throttle switches and throttle stop setting. Checking for vacuum leaks and a clean fuel distributor plate helps too! :-)

Now if it was running very well it might be worth $2000-3000, but must be in very clean condition.
