2002 Passat Left rear turn signal keeps going out.

We have a 2002 Passat wagon and it's left rear turn signal works - then doesn't - then does. I took it to the dealer and they replaced the bulb for free, but heck I don't want to keep taking it up there. Is there something I can look into?

Thanks.

Are you saying that it works and then stops working and for no reason you know of, starts working again? It is only the left rear signal that does not work? Has it worked since they replaced the bulb? Is there any connections with the use of your brakes?

I suspect it would fail only when you turned the turn signal on and then either used the brakes with it on or more likely only failed with the tail lights were on. If I am correct, replacing the lamp will usually fix it for good. It can be the lamp malfunctioning causing this.

Come to think of it. I bet it (left-rear turn signal) malfunctions only when the brakes are applied. I had the bulb replaced last week and it does work now - on occasion. But, I'll need to check it when the brakes are applied. Thanks for the ifo.

I've had a similar problem off and on with my wife's '03 Passat wagon. It's the contacts on the connector/cap that holds the bulb in place. If I remove the bulb, clean the contacts with some emery paper and replace, all is well again. It only happens on the left side, never on the right/passenger side. The fix usually lasts for several months (can't even remember the last time I had to do it) so it's not that big a deal.
