83 rabbit lower timing belt cover

I am considering replacing the timing belt on this car. I have the upper timing belt cover off but the lower cover looks more challenging. It appears to me that the crank shaft pulley must be taken off to allow the bottom cover to be removed. The manuals I have make no mention of this but it's pretty clear to me the pulley overlaps the cover by at least 1/4 inch. Can anyone confirm this? Also the pulley is bolted on, will I need a puller to get it off once the bolt is removed?

Thanks a bunch - Noel

I believe its the same as my 90 golf, you should be able to loosen the

3 allen bolts holding the pulleys just with the tension of the belts and engine compression (just leave the spark plugs in) you might have to put some penetrating oil on them first. It worked for me. Once its off the should be one more bolt holding it in place. The manuals keep referring to removing the water pump pulley or power steering pulley, but the crankshaft pulleys are the ones they mean.

Yes, remove both covers.

The main pulley is held on by 4 allen bolts. Remove these bolts and the pulley comes loose with a little tap.

Yeah, removing the pulley is necessary but not difficult (4 allen bolts as mentioned). Leave the transmission in gear and the wheels on the floor (e-brake on!!) if you have trouble getting them off. The pulley should come right off real easy once you get the last bolt off.

If there is an alignment dimple on the pulley, remember to reinstall it in the same position. There is on my diesel but I dunno if the gassers have one.

Leave the center bolt in, the one that holds the timing belt pulley. As others have mentioned just remove the "V" belt pulleys.

Thanks, I'll give it a try, athough I am concerned still because I have

4 hex head bolts and not allen bolts. I have the big bolt in the center and I thought that was what secured the pulley. So I will remove the 4 hex heads, tap the pulley off and all should be well i guess.

Hex bolts are allen bolts, just a different name for the same thing.
