Brake rotors and proper oil for 1.8T Engine

I have Jetta 2001 1.8T and looks like need to replace the front brake rotors or have them machined. From what I've heard usually machining them doesn't leave much life on them since they're thing so I am looking at buying new ones.

Any suggestions besides going to the dealer for rotors?

As far as oil for the 1.8T what is the dealer recommendation? Right now I am putting brand name 5-30 (Quaker State, Pennzoil) but I heard that VW now recommends synthetic?

I wouldn't use anything but synthetic in a turbo engine!

I would not machine them. You should be able to get rotors from other than the dealer. Get good ones, not from China. Today's brakes are not designed to reuse rotors.

It should be in the owner's manual. How long are you going between oil changes?

Without the turbo you don't need synthetic at 3K On the other hand if you have a turbo, you should always use synthetic as it can stand the heat a lot longer and may save your turbo. Again I suggest you go back and check the owner's manual for minimal specifications on the oil.

Use synthetic and double the intervals to make up the difference in cost and sleep well knowing your oil is not cooking in the turbo! My 99.5 tdi had a turbo and at 120k miles with synthetic and 10k change intervals it's still running good. Shell Rotella 5-40 is what I used and it's a synthetic and available at most Wal-Mart's for $14 per gallon.
